Two Step is a popular snorkeling spot located on the Big Island of Hawaii. It is known to be one of the best snorkel and dive spots of all the Hawaiian islands. The site is known for its clear, turquoise waters and abundant marine life, making it a popular destination.
Having snorkeled here many times I can say first hand the marine life at Two Step is diverse. Each time you'll see something new! On any given day you could spot a variety of tropical fish, sea turtles, eels, sea slugs, and even dolphins. The coral reef is also home to a variety of colorful coral and other marine plants, making it a beautiful and fascinating place to explore.
Snorkeling at Two Step is a must-do activity for visitors to the Big Island of Hawaii. The clear waters, diverse marine life, and beautiful coral reef make it a truly unforgettable experience.
Is Two Step Snorkeling Beginner Friendly?
Two Step Snorkeling is definitely beginner friendly. It's even an activity the whole family can do together.
Two Step is a sheltered bay with generally great snorkeling conditions. The easy entrance into the water is actually how Two Step got its name. Lava rocks naturally formed two steps into the ocean. These two steps are where snorkelers can sit down put their gear on and easily enter the water.
However, in extremely high tides it can make getting in and out difficult and visibility poor. If this is the case you'll want to wait for the waters to calm.
Best Time to Snorkel Two Step
The best time to snorkel two step is in the morning. In the morning the water is the calmest. This will make getting in and out easier and will ensure you have clear visibility.
Two Step Snorkeling Rental
Since there are no facilities down by Two Step you will want to rent your snorkel gear in advance. I recommend stopping in Kona and heading over to Snorkel Bob's they have some of the best prices on the island.
Directions to Two Step Beach & Parking
Two Step is actually located at Honaunau Bay. From Kona you will drive south on Highway 11 (Hawaii Belt Rd) for about 20 miles. Turn right onto Ke Ala O Keawe Rd. You will take this down for about 3.5 miles then turn left at the Pu'uhonua O Honaunau National Historical Park sign.
There is paid to park lot down by the shoreline. However, it fills up very quickly. More than likely you will have to park on the street and walk down to the beach.
Where Do You Snorkel at Two Step
The bay is a very large area with lots of ground to cover you could be wondering where to head. There are two options the right side and the left side. Both are vastly different. And if you are wondering can see dolphins at two step? The answer is yes if you're lucky!
Right Side of The Bay
The right side of the bay is a good area for beginners and experienced snorkelers. You will be in about six to ten feet of water. There is significantly less reef on this side of the bay. However, since this is a nice wide-open area, this is where the dolphins tend to hang out. You might spot some if you are lucky. Swimming further from the shore near the drop off you can find Aloha written in the sand!
Left Side of the Bay
The left side of the bay is also a great spot for beginners and experienced snorkelers and is my favorite side of the bay to snorkel on. On this side, the water can reach depths of 20 feet. Here you will find tons of reefs and abundant marine life. There are some canyons and a few small arches to explore or dive through. This spot is always where you can find sea turtles. Also, if you swim further out away from the shore to where the reefs become less frequent you may catch some dolphins resting in this bay.
Respect For the Ocean and The Animals
Up to half of the world's coral reefs have already been lost or severely damaged. Unfortunately, not enough is being done to protect them and they are continuing to die. Please do your part and make sure your skin is free of oils, and lotions, and if you are going to apply sunscreen please ensure it is reef safe.
Seeing a Sea Turtle or a Dolphin can be very invigorating and at times it can be hard to not get overly excited. However, it's best to admire these animals from a distance. Give them space and don't intrude. Touching and or feed of these animals is also illegal.
